Why I Believe In Christian Counseling

There are many areas of growth that can happen in the process of therapy. For me, it was in understanding and caring for myself.

I grew up in a Christian home, the child of missionaries, learning to love God and to serve others. But during my 20’s I went through some very difficult situations, and I needed help. This was my first experience with Christian counseling. Slowly, through counseling, my eyes were opened to a broader understanding of a healthy Christian life. I learned that in order to love others well, I had to experience God’s love for me and to even love and care for myself. I used to think that it was selfish or self-centered to think about myself, but then I learned the importance of boundaries, communication and of both giving and receiving. I learned that to have healthy relationships, all parties need to be valued.

My personal experience with counseling confirmed my desire to go back to school for a Masters in Social Work. I am truly grateful for the privilege I have had for many years to come alongside others in their journeys of healing.

My career as a Christian counselor has also led me to wrestle deeply with how the best of the psychological sciences stands up to the Word of God. It is of no surprise that science only confirms what God has already taught us in His Word. Wellspring is based on the beautiful blending of truths about humans from a scientific and Biblical perspective.

When Christine Schlottman and I founded Wellspring, it was because we recognized the need for a visible Christian counseling organization in Miami. We also wanted to offer the opportunity for others to give to support counseling for those who could not afford it. We never dreamed it would become the large, professional practice and mental health educator that it is today.
