Why We ALL Could Use an Annual Mental Health Checkup

Imagine the following conversation…

Ana: “I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.”
Brian: “Oh! Is everything ok?”
Ana: “Yes! It’s just my annual.”

Conversation done, right? It’s no big deal! In fact, it’s expected. The response would likely be normalized with an “Oh, okay,” or even an affirmation of “Good for you, those are important to get done.”

Most of us wouldn’t dream of skipping our annual physical, but when was the last time you checked up on your mental health in the same way?

What would it be like if once a year you could have a “Mental Health Annual Checkup“? A safe space dedicated to review your emotional wellbeing, stress levels, relationships, and coping skills. Not because anything is wrong, but because awareness and early support are the best medicine.

A mental health checkup includes a confidential conversation with a therapist, a brief screening for common mental health concerns, and a discussion of lifestyle factors. Just like a physical, the goal isn’t to diagnose, but to keep small concerns from becoming bigger ones.

Why We ALL Deserve an Annual Mental Health Checkup

1. Prevention is powerful. Catching emotional strain early can prevent it from worsening.

2. Life changes constantly… as such, our mental health needs evolve too!

3. Even “normal” stress adds up. This helps us slow down and check in with ourselves.

4. It removes stigma. Making mental health care as routine as going to the dentist helps normalize talking about emotions!

5. You get a personalized snapshot. This can highlight patterns you might not notice day-to-day.

6. You don’t have to wait until it’s bad. Therapy isn’t only for crisis; it’s for growth, insight, and better relationships.

7. It builds emotional resilience. Learning coping tools during a calm season makes you stronger for harder times to come.

8. Mind and body are connected. Caring for your mind is caring for your body too!

9. It models healthy habits for others. Talking openly about your mental health encourages loved ones to do the same.

10. You deserve to thrive, not just survive. A checkup reminds you that your mind, just like your body, deserves regular care! You’re worth it!
