It’s not just “the Blues”!

When we or a loved one “feel down,” we may be quick to dismiss it as just feeling sad. But when someone has depression, it is important to note that it goes far beyond “having the blues.” Depression is a medical condition that alters how you think, feel, and behave day to day. It is all encompassing, affecting your mood, sleep, energy, diet, motivation, and relationships.

While it is true that not everyone who feels sad has depression, we wanted to provide you with some key warning signs to recognize in yourself or loved ones to know when it’s time to reach out for professional help!

Questions to honestly ask yourself…

  • Have you been feeling sad, empty, or hopeless recently?
  • Are you losing interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy?
  • Have there been recent changes in sleep patterns? Too little or too much?
  • Have there been any changes in your appetite or weight?
  • Have you noticed yourself feeling tired or low energy?
  • Do you have difficulty concentrating or making decisions?
  • Do you ever feel worthless or guilty?
  • Have you had any thoughts of death or suicide in the past month?

If you notice yourself answering “yes” to two or more of these questions– particularly if the feelings have lasted more than two weeks or include thoughts of death or suicide– it may be time to reach out for support. You don’t have to wait until things feel severe to ask for help.

What to look out for in your loved ones…

  • Withdrawing from friends or activities
  • Noticeable changes in mood or personality
  • Neglecting personal hygiene or responsibilities
  • Expressing hopelessness or self-criticism
  • Appearing unusually tired, flat, or tearful
  • Talking about feeling like a burden
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs

Our final thoughts? Depression is not a sign of weakness. It is also not something you can simply “snap out of.” Its symptoms can range from minimal to severe, and if left unaddressed they will worsen over time.

But with the right help, healing is absolutely possible. Call today and you will get the support you need to make the lifestyle changes you want and experience the relief and recovery from depression you deserve.
